Electronic Health Record Integration

The Challenge

The network's five hospitals operated with different electronic health record systems and no integration between them. A patient treated in one hospital's emergency department had no medical history available if transferred to another facility. Administrative staff duplicated records manually, and physicians made clinical decisions without access to a patient's complete history.

The Solution

BeeWorks developed an integration layer based on the HL7 FHIR standard that connected the three existing EHR systems without replacing them. A centralized Master Patient Index (MPI) was implemented for unique identification of individuals across the entire network. Data synchronizes in real time upon any relevant clinical event. The solution was built in .NET and deployed on Azure, with role-based access controls to comply with Colombia's health data protection regulations.

Results

Physicians at all five hospitals now access the complete medical history of any network patient from their usual system, without switching platforms. Duplicate records fell 60% in the first six months, reducing both administrative workload and the risk of errors from inconsistent data. The network reported a significant improvement in triage speed in emergency departments for patients transferred from other facilities.

Testimonial

"The BeeWorks team guided us at every step, from data mapping to staff training. They understood that in healthcare there is no margin for error, and they worked with that responsibility."
